The mission of the Detroit Parish Nurse Network of Southeast Michigan (DPNN) is to serve God's people in the community through the support and advocacy of parish nurses, their programs, and whole health ministries.

..The DPNN is a non-profit organization comprised of nurses, educators, business people, clergy, and others committed to advocating for whole health (mind, body, and spirit) through Parish Nursing. Parish Nursing enables people to make a vital connection to God, themselves, and others through whole health advocacy. Parish Nurses, and other health ministers, in conjunction with their faith communities, participate in a healing, and compassionate outreach through visitations, education, advocacy, referrals, and faith sharing.

...The parish nurse concept originated in the United States under the pioneering guidance of Rev.Granger E. Westburg, a Lutheran Clergyman and hospital chaplain. In 1984, he helped develop a partnership between Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illionis and six Chicago-area churches, each with a Parish Nurse. In 1985, the first formal Parish Nurse Programs were established at two Detroit churches.

...In 1992, the Greater Detroit Interfaith Roundtable's "Community Health Connection" invited these two pioneer Parish Nurses to speak to their group in order to learn more about the model and to promote it to other faith communities. In 1995, Mercy Health Services offered a training program for Parish Nurses. Out of this gathering, the Detroit Parish Nurse Network (DPNN) was formed.
